This book is intended for anyone interested in programming Atmel AVR XMEGA A4 microcontrollers, with particular emphasis on the ATxmega16A4. It explains the most important peripherals and demonstrates them through examples, making it suitable for learning about XMEGA microcontrollers and developing more complex applications. Readers are expected to know the C programming language and understand the basic concepts of microprocessor technology. The chapters cover the basic features of XMEGA A4 microcontrollers, pin layouts, the AVR core and memory; input/output ports and their configuration; the interrupt system, interrupt levels and priorities, and the PMIC multilevel interrupt controller; the TC 16-bit counter/timer with capture register, output compare and PWM functions; examples using the TC unit; the AWeX and Hi-Res extension units for motor control; the built-in dual-channel 12-bit D/A converter; clock distribution and clock-setting options, including internal clock generators, external crystal oscillators and PLL frequency multiplication; the event system, including a quadrature decoder; the DMAC direct memory access controller; the 12-channel 12-bit A/D converter; and a brief overview of other peripherals. The appendix contains diagrams of the XMEGABOARD development kit, M8LED eight-LED module, MSVORKY port-bit connection terminals, MDAC8 external 8-bit D/A converter and MADTEST A/D converter test module. Examples include software LED flashing, LED flashing through interrupts, PWM brightness control, a square-wave generator using the output comparator, a sine-wave generator using the built-in D/A converter, use of the internal 32 MHz oscillator with and without PLL, use of an external crystal with PLL, and frequency measurement using capture mode and the event system.
