This Latin-Czech edition presents Hexameron, or The Six Days of Creation, by Ambrose, the Milanese bishop, with an introductory study and commentary by David Vopřada. The first chapter of Genesis, which opens the collection of biblical writings, has inspired the curiosity and imagination of thinkers for more than two thousand years. Among the most important interpretations of this biblical text is Hexameron, a collection of homilies by Ambrose from the end of the fourth century. Ambrose explains the creation of the world in the spirit of Christian faith while also reflecting on contemporary philosophical ideas about the origin and nature of the cosmos. His reflections connect the biblical narrative with ancient thought and mystical contemplation of the individual elements of the created world, from the heavens, sun, moon and stars to the variety of plants and animals, and finally humanity.
