Komentář k Janovu evangeliu I-II – Órigenés z Alexandrie (2025)

This Czech-language edition presents the first two books of Origen’s Commentary on the Gospel of John. Origen (c. 185–c. 253) was an early Christian theologian and biblical interpreter who worked first in Alexandria and later in Caesarea in Palestine. Exegesis was central to his work, and his commentary on the Gospel of John was one of his most extensive projects, occupying a significant part of his creative life. The first books were written in Alexandria before his departure for Caesarea around 232. The volume includes Origen’s preface to the entire work, focusing especially on the concept of the “gospel,” followed by an interpretation of John 1:1–7a. This relatively short passage from the Gospel’s prologue leads to a discussion of Christ’s names, or epinoiai, particularly the highest epinoiai: “Beginning,” “Wisdom,” “Word,” “Life” and “Light of Men.” In Origen’s understanding, these concepts reveal Christ as the Son of God and divine hypostasis alongside God the Father, as well as the ultimate goal of humanity’s ascent to God and true Life. At the end of the second book, Origen introduces John the Baptist, the witness to the Light sent by God and the forerunner of Jesus.
