This volume brings together two lecture series by Karl Jaspers from the 1930s, in which he systematically presents the idea of the Encompassing: that which includes all horizons but can never become an object of experience or thought. The five lectures Reason and Existence from 1935 rank among Jaspers’s most important texts and among the key works of existential philosophy. They respond to the spiritual situation created by Kierkegaard’s and Nietzsche’s radical criticism of reason, which can no longer be accepted uncritically as the sole measure of life and philosophy. The second series, The Philosophy of Existence from 1938, introduces Jaspers’s understanding of philosophy and explores the relationship between science, philosophy and religion; the Encompassing; existence, truth, reason and transcendence; authority and education; and the concept of philosophical faith.
