Description

Ivan Dubský (1926–2023), an important representative of twentieth-century Czech philosophy, died suddenly on 17 May 2023. He remained mentally completely alert until the end of his life. This reissue of the collection was prepared as a tribute to his 97th birthday, which he did not live to see. The original version was compiled by Petr Rezek for Dubský’s 55th birthday in 1981. At a time when political normalisation in Czechoslovakia, imposed by the tanks of the Warsaw Pact armies after the “excess” of the Prague Spring of 1968, was gathering full force, Ivan Dubský, like several of the contributing authors, could no longer officially create or work in his field. The collection could therefore appear only as a samizdat typescript, in an edition matching the number of contributors. Even so, authors were found who were able to offer well-informed philosophical reflection and willing to declare their admiration for Ivan Dubský in a samizdat publication. Alongside 11 Czech philosophers, the collection includes contributions by 5 foreign authors and 15 Czech poets and writers. This still-relevant document of its time deserves not to fall into oblivion. Apart from the complete bibliography of Dubský’s writings, short profiles of the foreign contributors and a biographical sketch by Lenka Hanovská, all texts are presented in their original form. The contents are in Czech.
