Description

Plato’s dialogue Laches is characteristically ethical in its initial focus, asking how one should live and what kind of person one should be, while also considering the importance of educational methods. The discussion begins with two Athenian citizens, Lysimachus and Melesias, who are aware that they themselves received rather inadequate education and are unsure whether armed combat is a suitable subject for their sons. They seek advice from the Athenian generals Laches and Nicias, hoping that these men will also inspire their sons, through their example, to acquire the qualities needed for a perfect and successful life. Becoming an excellent and successful person requires not only the cultivation of the right habits, but also education in the broader sense and philosophy. The result is not a collection of isolated abilities, but a complete excellence of character and a corresponding way of life. The contents are in Czech.
