Description

In this early work, Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335–c. 395 AD) presents an interpretation of the Old Testament Book of Ecclesiastes and its seemingly pessimistic tone. If a person focuses solely on the sensory world, they must ultimately come to recognise that everything is vanity. According to Gregory, this vanity can be escaped by turning towards the true good, which cannot be perceived by the senses and remains the same at all times. In his criticism of human efforts to pursue various apparent goods, Gregory also strongly condemns every form of slavery. In the final part, he shows how every created being is conditioned by existing in time and asks when the right moment for virtue is. A person need not wait for the right moment, but can choose the good at any time and direct their whole life towards it.
