Description

In this second volume of Hannah Arendt’s final work, published posthumously, the philosopher examines the power of the will and the fundamental problem of freedom. The Czech-language book traces the history of willing from the discovery of the will in Aristotle, Paul and Augustine, through Thomas Aquinas and Duns Scotus, to its modern rejection by Nietzsche and Heidegger. It explores the enduring conflict between belief in an omnipotent God and free will, which persists after the end of traditional metaphysics as a conflict between freedom and causality, and later between freedom and the laws of history. Arendt concludes that the will was better understood by people of action, for whom it becomes a source of action, than by philosophers.
