Description
In this lively, accessible Czech-language work, the prominent ancient physician and philosopher Galen of Pergamum (129–c. 216) considers how people can recover from uncontrolled emotions that damage their lives and overcome faults that cloud their judgment. Drawing on examples from his own life and the lives of his friends, he describes the difficulties faced by those overcome by anger, grief, or fear of loss, and offers practical methods to help them regain their self-respect. The second part examines errors of judgment, from a readiness to believe unsupported claims to doubting what is clearly true. Galen particularly recommends that philosophers study applied geometry, whose results can be tested in practice, unlike those of most philosophical teachings. The book includes an introduction and a translation of the Greek text by M. Havrda.
