Description

This Czech-language edition presents Notes from Theodotus by Clement of Alexandria, a Greek Christian theologian known chiefly as the author of the seven books of the Stromata. His celebrated work sets out to explain the most essential theological questions to students, preserve the sacred tradition handed down in the Alexandrian church from its Jewish beginnings, and address a broad readership including Greek philosophers, members of the Jewish community and followers of sects. Notes from Theodotus forms part of a somewhat mysterious text preserved in a manuscript after the Stromata and entitled the Eighth Book of the Stromata. The text consists of diverse notes traditionally divided into three sections: the Eighth Book of the Stromata, Notes from Theodotus and the Eclogae propheticae. The first and third sections have already been published in Czech, and this edition makes the second available to Czech readers. It consists mainly of quotations and paraphrases from the works of Valentinian Gnostics, accompanied by Clement’s commentaries. It is therefore one of the most important records of Valentinian gnosis and a valuable source for understanding Clement’s own theological thought, shaped in part through confrontation with these teachings. This Greek-Czech edition includes an introduction with commentary; the translation was prepared by Veronika Černušková.
