Description
This volume presents Czech translations of three works by Ambrose connected with Christian initiation: An Explanation of the Creed, On the Sacraments and On the Mysteries. They introduce readers not only to the late-antique form of handing over the baptismal creed, the individual baptismal rites and the first celebration of the Eucharist by the newly baptized, but also to the meaning of how these sacraments unite believers with the mystery of Christ and open the way to salvation. The catecheses offer an important example of Ambrose’s allegorical exegesis, applied in his mystagogical writings on several levels to both biblical texts and liturgical ritual. Still relevant to contemporary reflection on the meaning and form of worship, they are valuable not only for the history of liturgy, but also for their insight into late-antique theology and the way theological concepts were conveyed to listeners of the period.
