Description

This book, the third part of an implicit trilogy, deepens Robert Spaemann’s ontology and ethics and presents a fully developed anthropology. The first two volumes dealt with the history and defence of a teleological view of nature and humanity, and with ethics and the relationship between eudaimonism and deontology. At its core is a thoughtful examination of the relationship between personality and nature. In this work on anthropology, though not exclusively on that subject, readers can follow Spaemann’s distinct continental neo-Aristotelian approach in contrast to the Anglo-Saxon Lockean and Humean tradition. He also seeks to move beyond Cartesian dualism, finding a path between the Scylla of naturalistic monism and the Charybdis of spiritualistic dualism. The result is a theory of persons rather than a theory of the person in the singular, since persons can exist only in the plural. Although Spaemann rejects personalism, he sees the ability to make or accept a promise and the ability to forgive as the defining characteristics of persons. The book is in Czech.
