Description
This Czech-language collection of essays commemorates the life anniversary of the prominent Czech philosopher and theologian Lenka Karfíková. Written by her students and colleagues, the studies together provide a cross-section of the history of European thought, with in-depth explorations of major figures from ancient philosophy, patristics, medieval philosophy and mysticism, the Renaissance, the modern era and the present day. Their wide range of subjects reflects the richness of Europe’s intellectual tradition, while ideas from different periods often prove surprisingly relevant, including ancient discussions of Aristotle’s concept of time, Philo of Alexandria’s reflections on being “sated with goodness,” the “feminist theology” of Clement of Alexandria, Boethius’s vision of true human happiness, the medieval mystic Bernard of Clairvaux’s psychological reflections on suffering and compassion, Paracelsian natural philosophy, Comenius’s structural ontology, and Herder’s epistemology and theory of language.
