Description
This philosophical book examines causality in Buddhist thought and its soteriological significance. It presents the first Czech translation and commentary on the first and twentieth chapters of Nāgārjuna’s key work, Root Verses on the Middle Way, which explore causality. Nāgārjuna, one of Asia’s most important and influential philosophers, closely connects causality with emptiness, the central theme of his thought. His analysis seeks to reveal the antinomic and logically contradictory nature of a theory of causality based on entities possessing an unchanging, self-existent essence or intrinsic nature. He concludes that no inherent causal connection can exist between such entities. Causality is therefore not ultimately an objective relationship or metaphysical force linking things, but a conceptually constructed relationship that could not exist without our conceptualising mind. Although it is not the cement of the universe or a physical force, it conventionally exists for Nāgārjuna as a pragmatic conceptual construct underlying everyday practice. The contents are in Czech.
