Description
Ludwig Wittgenstein (1889–1951) is one of the key figures in twentieth-century philosophy, and his work is one of the major sources of modern analytic philosophy. His thinking fulfilled philosophy’s universal claim and his theory of meaning also influenced ethnologists, linguists and others. This collection of miscellaneous remarks, written alongside his philosophical works, reflects this reach beyond philosophy and addresses both the nature of philosophical work and questions of art and religion. Like most of Wittgenstein’s work, the remarks were published posthumously. The editors arranged them chronologically, making it possible to follow the development of Wittgenstein’s philosophical and general views, and added a subject index to facilitate thematic orientation. The sources are identified, and the translation has been supplemented and revised for this edition, allowing the remarks to be read alongside the originals in Wittgenstein’s electronically available estate.
