Description
In Heidegger’s major work Being and Time, Hegel appears primarily as a representative of “vulgar” metaphysics of time. However, the lecture Hegel’s Concept of Experience, which Heidegger delivered as part of a seminar on the Phenomenology of Spirit during the 1942–1943 academic year, focuses on central themes of Hegel’s own philosophy. Heidegger examines the nature of philosophy itself, as well as how to understand finitude and the relationship between finite beings and the absolute within Hegel’s philosophy. Above all, he addresses the status of experience in the Phenomenology of Spirit, a concept central to twentieth-century phenomenology. The detail of Heidegger’s commentary provides a valuable starting point for understanding the relationship between two philosophies that rank among the most important events in the history of Western thought. The Czech text is translated from the German original Hegels Begriff der Erfahrung in M. Heidegger’s Gesamtausgabe, volume 5, Holzwege. The pagination alongside the text refers to the original edition. The contents were presented at a seminar on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit and Aristotle’s Metaphysics, Books IV and IX, during the 1942–1943 academic year, and were also delivered twice to a smaller group of interested participants.
