Description
In Martyrs, Tertullian addresses Christians awaiting martyrdom in prison and encourages them to remain steadfast and unafraid to die for God. Since neither of the classical literary forms prescribed by ancient tradition, the consolation or the exhortation, fully suited his purpose, Tertullian combined the two. Following an ancient rhetorical tradition reaching back to Aristotle and developed in detail by Quintilian, he added “pagan” examples and the characteristic motif of the philosophical diatribe, creating a new, distinctive Christian genre that some scholars consider among the most compelling works of its kind in all of ancient Christianity. The book includes an introduction, translation and notes by Petr Kitzler. The contents are in Czech.
