Description
These essays by Hannah Arendt explore the nature of freedom, authority and history through the decisive break caused by the interruption of the Western philosophical tradition, which led to the totalitarian regimes of the twentieth century. First published in 1961, the book opens with a statement by René Char, the French poet and member of the resistance during the Nazi occupation of France: “Our inheritance was left to us by no testament.” Echoing through the eight essays, the quotation points to the difficult position of modern people: a gulf has opened between the past and the future, and inherited concepts can no longer bridge it. The contents are in Czech.
