Description

This Czech-language edition presents Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s Reflections on the Government of Poland, his final political work, written in 1771 after he returned to Paris in June 1770 following many upheavals. Rousseau was asked by the rebellious Polish confederates to draw up a reform of the Polish constitution, and agreed on condition that his work would not be published, although illegal copies circulated in Paris within a year of its completion. He considers whether the Polish nation can survive while Poland’s state existence is threatened, anticipating the national movements of the nineteenth century and demonstrating once again his originality as a thinker. Numerous references to The Social Contract confirm the unity of Rousseau’s political thought and show that, even late in life, he had lost none of the power of his eloquence or conviction. The translation includes explanatory notes, an index, a bibliography and an afterword placing the work in its historical context. The contents are in Czech.
