Description
This book is a collection of articles, studies and lectures published on various occasions from the mid-1930s, mainly during the 1940s, with the final contributions dating from the late 1950s. It is divided into two parts. The first examines the so-called Homeric question from various perspectives, including the history of research, the genesis of the texts, the figure of Homer or the Homeric singer, Homer’s era, and reflections of Cretan-Mycenaean art in the Iliad. The second part, best read with Homer’s works at hand, discusses selected scenes from the Iliad and the Odyssey, including Hector and Andromache, Achilles’ decision, Hector’s death and Odysseus’ return, as well as a widely cited study of Achilles’ shield. The text is illustrated with images, mostly of vases, as well as small bronze objects and weapons. A comprehensive bibliography on the Homeric question and the Homeric poems is supplemented by more recent works in an editorial note.
