Description

This correspondence with the distinguished religious studies scholar and philosopher Gerhard (Gershom) Scholem begins while Hannah Arendt is struggling for sheer survival in French exile. Their connection is Walter Benjamin, Scholem’s friend, whom Arendt met in emigration in Paris and who entrusted his manuscripts to her before her departure for the United States. Benjamin failed to escape Europe and took his own life on the French-Spanish border in 1940. In one of her first letters, Arendt informs Scholem, who has by then lived in Palestine for nearly two decades, of Benjamin’s tragic fate. A long dialogue then unfolds between New York and Jerusalem and between two opposing personalities: the independent political theorist Arendt and the committed Zionist Scholem, a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and author of the seminal study Major Trends in Jewish Mysticism. The contents are in Czech.
