Description
Marie Pujmanová (1893—1958) embraced socialist realism from the second half of the 1930s. However, we consider her works that focus on the inner lives of her characters, especially children and adolescents, to be more vivid and artistically successful than her social novels. These include her debut Under the Wings (1917, revised several times), inspired by the harmonious environment of her grandmother's patriarchal home, the novel The Patient of Doctor Hegel (1931, 1940), in which she utilized and re-evaluated some motifs from girls' literature, and the novella Foreboding (1942), depicting the first awakening of love and maturation. The edition by Emil and Marie Lukeš is based on the fourth edition of the book Under the Wings from 1947 and the first version of The Patient of Doctor Hegel unmarked by self-censorship.
