Description
A classic work of Czech prose set in a Slovácko village, first published between 1903 and 1904. It captures the customs and realities of the South Moravian countryside and the mentality of its inhabitants at the end of the 19th century, as well as the disintegration of traditional rural communities and conservative values. The narrative unfolds in a cycle of the natural year, beginning with sowing and culminating in the harvest. The book, which gained fame through a dramatization by Miroslav Krobot at the National Theatre in Prague (1993), is published in the Czech Library in two volumes.
