Description
The new novel by the author of "The Expulsion of Gerta Schnirch". High in the hills of the White Carpathians, scattered among the sparse buildings, is a place where everything is far away. It is said that this is precisely why some women managed to preserve the knowledge and intuition that we have lost. They passed it down from generation to generation for centuries. They were called goddesses because they could beseech God for help. And they could even assist a little in His interventions... They were said to see into the future. So why did they not save their own? Dora Idesová is the last of the goddesses. She resists accepting the outdated way of life and divining for newcomers from poured wax like her aunt Surmena. Everything changes, however, once she realizes that what seemed to be an unfortunate coincidence in her life was a carefully thought-out plan. Her placement in a boarding school, Jakoubek's institutional care, hospitalization in a psychiatric hospital in Kroměříž... At the end of the 1990s, an operational file kept by the StB on an internal enemy - her aunt Surmena - awaits her in the Pardubice archive of the Ministry of the Interior. Dora incredulously unravels the unknown fates of her family and other goddesses... Were the goddesses a danger to trusting patients? Or were they truly an ideological threat to the normalized society? Or was there an extermination of the last relic...
