Description
Bianca Bellová drew attention to herself with her debut Sentimentální román. The novella Mrtvý muž clearly shows that a new captivating storyteller has emerged in Czech literature. The story is a monologue of a woman who reflects on her life. The banality and grayness of childhood and adolescence in the 1970s and 1980s are permeated by hidden family dramas with which the narrator is confronted - a grandfather murdered by the communists, a grandmother's open hatred of the regime, a mother's emerging mental illness, and a father who experiences his coming out during normalization. The narrator describes it all with a cynical detachment, which, however, dissolves when she confesses her love for a certain celebrity. Suddenly, she too is swept away by a passionate feeling that consumes her the deeper it seems more hopeless. Everything then leads to an unexpected resolution. The novella Mrtvý muž is equally remarkable for its suggestive and colorful narrative style, as well as its confidently conducted dialogues.
