Description

We present a new annotated edition of the supposed Old Czech verse monuments from the time of the national revival. The manuscripts, which were supposed to document a glorious and democratic national past dating back to the early Middle Ages, and an idealistic vision of a developed Old Czech culture, were enthusiastically received after their "discovery" (1817 and 1818) and inspired several subsequent generations of Czech artists. It was not until the end of the 19th century that scholars, rejecting false patriotic illusions, proved their inauthenticity – the true authors were likely Václav Hanka and Josef Linda. Both works, which we no longer value for their "antiquity" but for the beauty of poetic language, are presented in a classic translation by Kamil Bednář, in a transcription of the original find, and in the first modern Czech translation made by Václav Hanka. The commentary recapitulates the disputes over RKZ and presents them as distinctive artistic works.
