Description
Around the work of Martianus Capella, De nuptiis Philologiae et Mercurii (On the Marriage of Philology and Mercury), more questions than answers are emerging in scholarly literature. The evaluation of the author fluctuates from denunciation and speculation about his eccentricity, reflected in the thoughtlessness and disproportionate diversity of his work, to his recognition as a mediator of part of the ancient heritage of the Middle Ages. Martianus Capella framed the exposition of the seven liberal arts within a fairy tale about the marriage of the learned earthly woman Philology to the god Mercury. Remarkably, he combined allegorical representation with the wit of Menippean satire, thus giving his encyclopedia the necessary lightness entirely within the bounds of the principle of docere et delectare. However, he prepared a difficult path for interpreters of the work to understand his intention.
