Description
In 1929, Stalin initiated the process of agricultural collectivization, which essentially became the second Russian revolution. Millions of larger and smaller farmers were gradually forced to hand over their land to newly created agrarian enterprises – collective kolkhozes or state sovkhozes. A tragic consequence of collectivization was the collapse of agricultural production followed by a deadly famine unprecedented in European history. Between 1931 and 1933, at least five million people died of hunger in the Soviet Union. However, the Soviet leadership deliberately did not provide assistance to the population in the affected areas and instead exploited the tragedy for its political goals. As the author notes, nearly two-thirds of the total number of dead were Ukrainians, who did not perish due to flawed economic policies, but became victims of Stalin's targeted state terror.
