Description

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a man of many talents and interests. He worked as a general practitioner, a lay preacher, a convinced spiritualist, a historian, and a reformer of civic life. He spent ten years traveling with his wife across all continents, where he dedicated himself to spreading the ideas of spiritualism. The detective Sherlock Holmes became synonymous with his writing career, but it would be a real mistake to overlook the many other novels and short stories he wrote, which often have a spiritual subtext. Doyle's literary mastery, characterized by his ability to create a strong and wittily pointed plot, is also reflected in this collection with a maritime theme. Four of them are connected by a single main character, the pirate captain John Sharkey, a special, somewhat exaggerated prototype of evil for the author. The stories included in the collection 'From the Cradle of Blue Waves' do not lose their charm even years after their creation. This is despite the fact that when the devastating wars of the Spanish Succession ended with the Treaty of Utrecht, countless privateers sent to sea by previously warring parties found themselves somewhat out of work.
