The readers of this novel accompany the main character Anežka from her first romance to her retirement age. Anežka, a somewhat simple young woman, marries a handsome and enterprising man. She gives birth to two sons and a daughter. The older son drinks and together with his uncle becomes a disgrace to the Sklenář family. Anežka does not have it easy with the other family members either. However, when it seems that the worst period has passed and she and her husband can live peacefully in their new house, she is struck by several more blows of fate. Anežka has wished many times to leave this life, but it has not granted her such mercy. She must drink the cup of bitterness to the dregs. Life knows no mercy for anyone; how could it take into account an entirely ordinary woman? "Antonín, if you only knew how your well-meaning efforts turned out! Death took Anička from me.
