Description
The War in Vendée in western France is known to us from the historical novels of V. Hugo, 'Ninety-Three,' and H. de Balzac, 'The Chouans.' In reality, it was a bloody civil war ignited by a popular uprising against the newly born French Republic, where both fighting sides quickly fought for survival. Originally a peasant revolt in Vendée transformed into an openly royalist counter-revolutionary uprising that threatened the young republic at its very foundations in terms of scale and strength. Countless atrocities were committed on both sides, against combatants and innocent civilians, including women and children. Much about the mutual hatred, the intensity of the battles, and the extent of suffering is suggested by the fact that in less than three years, around 30 regular battles were fought over an area of approximately 25,000 km2, resulting in thousands of dead, plus about 700 larger or smaller skirmishes and clashes, in which the number of fallen reached several hundreds or 'only' dozens.
