Description
Author Zdeněk Rydygr attempted to summarize the theme of coexistence between two nations, Czechs and Germans, in one district of the former Sudetenland in the context of both national and European events. The book begins at the end of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, traverses the pros and cons of the First Republic, the devastating years of the Second World War, and extends to the post-war 'settlements.' In addition to authentic memories from witnesses on both sides, the author seeks to illuminate some of the causes of mutual alienation and even hostility between the two nations. As a consequence, 3,300 German residents of Zákupy, who had been born, lived, and died here for over six centuries, faced transfer and forced departure in the years 1945 - 1946. A separate section of the publication consists of tables and lists along with some previously unknown documents and photographs.
