Description
The stories about the author's grandfather, a private doctor during the First Republic, and his father, a chief physician during socialism, as well as certain events from the author's childhood, provide partial testimonies about both of these periods as experienced by the families of two generations of rural doctors. Over a time span exceeding half a century, the author traces the fates of the main protagonists, starting with the study of medicine during Austria-Hungary, through private medical practice during the First Republic, the dramatic events of World War II, the nationalization of private practices, up to the recent past. The mosaic of memories of medical ancestors is complemented by archival photographs from the described times.
