Description

This Czech-language monograph on gerontopsychiatry, prepared by a team of authors under the direction of Roman Jirák from the Psychiatric Clinic of the First Faculty of Medicine at Charles University and the General University Hospital in Prague, addresses the mental disorders associated with ageing and old age. It covers the diagnosis, treatment, prevention and research of psychiatric disorders in older people and examines the field’s links with geriatrics, internal medicine, neurology, imaging methods, genetics and other clinical and preclinical disciplines. Particular attention is given to neurodegenerative diseases, dementia and other cognitive disorders. The book clearly discusses all aspects of the early diagnosis of developing dementia and its pharmacological and behavioural treatment. It also describes measures that can improve patients’ quality of life, prolong their ability to remain in their usual living conditions, familiar surroundings and social relationships, and reduce the burden on caregivers. It is intended for psychiatrists, neurologists and psychologists, and especially for general practitioners, who are often the first to encounter these disorders in older patients. The contents are in Czech.
