Description

The publication attempts to map the personality of Emil František Burian in an unconventional way, not through the usual form of a theater study or the popular 'they said about...' book. The author, EFB's son, has created a mosaic that combines various texts: unknown or forgotten documents, excerpts from public appearances, intimate private notes, letters, and poems by E. F. Burian, along with his first uncensored biography, quotes from reviews, interviews, articles, memories, letters, and other archival materials from contemporaries and witnesses. The book is complemented by twenty letters the author wrote to his father while working on this book. It includes testimonies from A. J. Liehm, Otomar Krejča, Jan Grossman, František Hrubín, František Listopad, Ludvík Vaculík, Pavel Tigrid, František Halas, Ivan Medek, Sergej Machonin, Jan Klusák, Jiří Sovák, Vlastimil Brodský, Vladimír Menšík, Jan Werich, Bertolt Brecht, Bohuslav Martinů, Jan Procházka, Antonín Zápotocký, Josef Topol, Jiří Suchý, Alfred Radok, Adolf Hoffmeister, and many others. EFB's personality has always been assessed only in accordance with the author of the given evaluation; theater critics wrote about the theater avant-garde, while historians only evaluated his post-war engagement.
