The number of diabetics is increasing enormously both in our country and worldwide. It is estimated that globally, during the first twenty-five years of this century, the number of patients with diabetes mellitus will double, and today practically every fifth person will develop diabetes in their old age. In the future, it may be every fourth or third person. There are still no absolutely valid and unchanging answers to many questions regarding a deeper understanding of the disease's pathogenesis, effective treatment, and prevention, although knowledge in individual areas has significantly advanced in recent years. Current medicine has new drugs that affect the disease through mechanisms different from the classical preparations used for years. Many effective drugs continue to be used, even though the actual mechanisms of their action are not known. Alongside the clearly positive contributions, negative effects are also gradually emerging. Treatment is now individualized, and the demands for its intensive monitoring are increasing. Diabetics today live longer than before, as more effective treatment methods are being used. Much has improved, but at the same time, the perspective on diabetes mellitus is becoming more complex.
