Description
The publication discusses the surgery of organ metastases from various tumors (in a broader sense), a topic that was almost unacceptable twenty years ago. However, over the last two decades, there has been a true revolution in treatment and diagnostic options in the approach to many malignant tumors. This development has brought the possibility of reducing the tumor and distant metastases after prior induction therapy to a size that makes it operable. Precise diagnostics of the number of these metastases throughout the body is then a crucial process for deciding on surgical intervention. Metastasis surgery utilizes new technologies such as radiosurgery, thermal ablation, tumor embolization techniques, and hyperthermia. This development allows for surgical intervention to be indicated more frequently in patients affected by metastatic disease. The authors aimed to provide an overview of therapeutic approaches in the surgery of organ metastases in this publication and to help seek new pathways towards curing advanced stages of cancer.
