Description

Malignant tumors are among the most common causes of death worldwide. The immediate cause of death from cancer is usually the disruption of the function of a vital organ (most often the brain, lungs, or liver) by an uncontrollably growing tumor mass. The uncontrolled growth of tumor cells in the liver can lead to the patient's death even in the absence of involvement of other organs or other complications of the cancer. Malignant liver tumors are very common. Although the frequency of primary liver tumors is relatively low in Europe and North America, the liver is the most common site for metastases. Without treatment, both primary and secondary liver tumors have a very poor prognosis, with a median survival of between 6 and 12 months. On the other hand, liver tumors are gradually becoming an example of successful treatment possibilities - in the last decade, significant progress has been made in the systemic treatment of tumors that most commonly metastasize to the liver. Locoregional treatment of liver metastases is also the most successful example of the use of locoregional approaches in the treatment of metastatic disease. This monograph is intended not only for clinical oncologists and radiotherapists but also for doctors from other fields: surgeons, gastroenterologists, and general internists.
