Description

Jan Bělehrádek (1896-1980), a Czech physician, biologist, professor at Charles University, and dean of the UK Medical Faculty, was one of the prominent figures in Czech biology and the political and social events of the past century. From the captivating narrative of Bělehrádek's younger son, along with memories from his former students, now well-known scientific personalities, a mosaic of this rare individual's life story is assembled, a man who dedicated his entire life to scientific research. The wide range of information extends back to the ancestral roots of the Bělehrádek family, covering his childhood, adolescence, and studies, professional successes, the war period marked by arrest and imprisonment in Terezín, the post-war period culminating in February 1948, his emigration, and the continuation of his scientific work in his new home in England. The book is equipped with a number of contemporary photographs, now unique, and also includes a ceremonial opening speech to students at the beginning of the school year 1930/1931, a complete bibliography of Bělehrádek's works covering the years 1920-1967, and a bibliography of works about Jan Bělehrádek. In the final chapter, Professor Bělehrádek is honored by his students - Augustin Svoboda, Oldřich Nečas, Jan Šmarda, Dušan Soudek, Ctirad John, Pavel Jerie, and Jiří Pravda - who remember him...
