In his first work on the history of international politics from 1957, Kissinger examines the diplomatic history of Europe from Napoleon's defeat in Russia through a series of international congresses from 1814 to 1822, to the anti-Turkish uprising in Greece in 1822, which definitively ended several years of declining British participation in European politics. At the center of the author's attention are the actors of many dozens of discussions, conferences, and congresses - Austrian Chancellor Metternich and his counterpart, British Foreign Secretary Lord Castlereagh. It is primarily through their fates and opinions that we observe how the Habsburg monarchy gradually distances itself from its imposed French ally after Napoleon's fall and takes on a leading role in European diplomacy, while Britain promotes its concept of a balance of power in Europe within the anti-Napoleonic coalition. At that time, European states attempted to build a new international order on the ruins of post-Napoleonic Europe, for the first time based on regular consultations and the effort to find unifying political principles. Kissinger analyzes it under the evident influence of the recently concluded Second World War, which presented the world with a very similar problem as the Napoleonic Wars did for Europe.
