Description

This collection of short stories, in Czech, is set in the Armenian town of Berd, near the border with Azerbaijan. Through its individual stories, Narine Abgarjan creates a varied, multilayered mosaic of her native town, marked by the First Nagorno-Karabakh War and its tragic consequences. Surrounded by majestic mountains, Berd has everything needed for a happy life: cosy stone houses, vegetable gardens and orchards. Its inhabitants go about their daily joys and troubles, cooking traditional food, collecting honey, baking bread, weaving carpets and raising children. Yet the war has affected each of them through exile, the loss of loved ones, physical or psychological injuries and lasting trauma. Still, people carry on living: mourning the dead, preserving their memory and helping those who need it more than they do, because life always triumphs over death.
