Description
Journalist Charles Laurence tells the story of his family, which was deeply affected by their stay in Prague in the 1950s. After 1989, the author returned to Prague and attempted to uncover, based on interviews and available documents, the reasons and circumstances that led to the recall of his father, a high-ranking British diplomat, back to London, and how it impacted the lives of his mother and sister. Laurence gradually discovers information that his mother's love affair with the Prague intellectual Jiří Mucha was not a sudden outburst of feelings on Mucha's part, but rather an operation of the State Security, in which Mucha played the role of a 'social agent.' The events described provide an unexpected insight into Mucha's activities during the communist regime as well as many other actors of that time, revealing the extent and manner of the mechanisms by which the State Security controlled and 'managed' the actions of citizens. The book is being released in a new edition.
