Description
The Czech architectural avant-garde is the life work of Otakar Nový, a leading expert in urbanism and the environment, as well as a connoisseur of the history of modern architecture. He focused his attention on the creators, projects, buildings, opinions, and overall significance of interwar functionalism. The theme of his work is set within a broadly conceived cultural context from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century. The author himself witnessed the intricate fates of the avant-garde from the second half of the 1930s, experiencing its hopes and disappointments, and he was acquainted with nearly all of its significant figures. Therefore, the story of the Czech architectural avant-garde is told with personal engagement. Alongside admiration for its enthusiasm and purity of intentions, he does not shy away from criticizing its intolerance and mistakes. The book contains more than two hundred photographs and is published in its third edition with a new graphic design.
