The author vividly recounts the incredible yet true story of Colonel A. W. Greely's American polar expedition, one of the harshest in history. In the 19th century, a number of significant polar expeditions took place, aimed at exploring uncharted territories. One of them was the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition led by Lieutenant A. W. Greely. A group of 25 men set sail in July 1881 with the goal of mapping previously uncharted areas and studying the meteorological conditions of life in the Arctic. What followed was a harrowing journey filled with extraordinary and often brutal experiences. The expedition members established a research station in a remote bay in the northeastern part of Canada. During their research stay, they had to face nearly all the hardships that could befall them: attacks by wolves, hurricane-force winds, temperatures plunging to 40 °C below zero, and the onset of madness from spending many months in the darkness of the polar night. In May 1882, they managed to break the record for reaching the northernmost point ever stepped on by a human foot. By that time, they were already expecting the arrival of a supply ship.
