Description
Leda, a professor of English literature at a university in Florence, hails from Naples, just like all the heroines of Elena Ferrante's novels. She once escaped from there to get married and give birth to two daughters. Now she is resting on a beach in southern Italy, divorced, her adult children have gone to their father, and to her surprise, she finally feels content and free. However, her encounter with a young mother, Nina, and her little daughter awakens buried memories of her childhood, of her mother, with whom she had, like most of Elena Ferrante's heroines, a complicated relationship, and of the daughters she loved so much that she began to fear losing herself in them. Initially calm reflections on her new life gradually transform into a harrowing confrontation with dark memories, which ultimately culminates in drama. Elena Ferrante, in this novel as well, delves into the inner world of a woman, uncovering the fractured relationships of the heroine with her family, her partner, and herself, allowing long-suppressed destructive feelings to surface.
