Description
The supplement to the works of Milada Součková, published by Prostor in 12 volumes, presents to those interested in literary history and the broader public previously unpublished letters by the author, which were stored in the estates or personal archives of individual recipients. Most of these letters were written during the writer's stay in the USA, where she served as a cultural attaché from September 1946 and where she remained in exile after February 1948. They are addressed to friends and personalities from various cultural circles, both those who shared the fate of exile with the author (L. and O. Radimští, O. Odložilík, R. Jakobson, G. Gruberová-Goepfertová) and those who lived in Czechoslovakia (J. Chalupecký, O. Leška, K. Milota). The introductory study and supplementary notes aim to illuminate the cultural-historical and literary contexts as well as the biographical circumstances. The letters are an important source not only for understanding the work of Milada Součková but also provide insight into the literary and cultural activities of Czechoslovak emigration and stand out as an impressive and unembellished account of the difficult life of a Czech writer in exile.
