Description
The novel The Razor's Edge is a prime example of Maugham's literary mastery. It tells the story of a young American, Larry Darrell, who volunteered as a pilot in World War I. After returning home to the prosperous environment of post-war Chicago, he struggles to fit back into the society of his peers and is indifferent to the American idea of a successful young man. He seeks answers to the higher questions of life's meaning, which he continues to ask after the brutal experiences of war, first in the books of ancient philosophers and later directly with Indian sages, of whom he becomes a student. Equally interesting is the author's portrayal of the characters in Larry's life, his former fiancée and her family, the snobbish uncle Elliott – alongside the darker side of the luxurious life in the metropolis.
