Description
In his memoir prose, Mark Slouka, the son of Czech parents who emigrated to the United States after the February coup, weaves a complex and often somber mosaic of his life. He decided to reveal his inner self, using writing as a form of therapy and lifting the veil on childhood memories of his parents. The central focus of the memoirs is primarily his mother, who meant the whole world to the young boy during his adolescence and for a long time was the most important person in his life. As he grew older, his relationship with her changed, and it is this ambivalence, this ebb and flow between love and hate, that the author remarkably depicts, grappling with the traumas that accompanied him into adulthood. Slouka sensitively yet truthfully captures the fragility of the relationship between mother and son, the struggles of adolescence, and the often complicated life of immigrants in a foreign land.
