Description
In the novel Old Masters (1985), the famous Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard (1931–1989) brings his literary method of depicting the world to near perfection. The central theme of his entire work – is it a comedy? is it a tragedy? – unfolds with sarcasm and scathing criticism of everything and everyone. On one hand, there is the art of exaggeration, comedy, and humor; on the other, a passionate engagement against the state – especially the Austrian one – society, and culture. Thus, some see him as a relentless moral critic, while others view him as a master of literary comedy and humor. In either case, both of these poles are transformed by Bernhard into exquisite literature, the reading of which is an extraordinary experience.
