Once a homeless man, Hobo finds himself "on the border of life and eternity," after falling to the bottom of an abandoned shaft. In his mind, he replays a meeting with an unknown man who recently visited him in his lonely lair isolated from civilization. The visitor tells him about an "extraordinary event" that forced him to reevaluate his life - as a successful political wheeler-dealer, he had worked his way into the ranks of the influential and powerful after the fall of the Czechoslovak communist regime, but now he does not know what will happen to him next. Hobo also begins to recount his past. However, as they reveal their histories to each other, it becomes clear that although they have so far existed at completely opposite poles of society, both are key players in the same "extraordinary event," and their meeting was not a coincidence. Jiří Pehe unfolds - just like in his previous novels Na okraji zmizelého and Tři tváře anděla - a captivating story that this time maps the value and political turbulence of recent decades through the fates of both protagonists. And just as in the two previous novels, he raises fundamental questions about the meaning of our existence once again.
